Simplify your investments with Birth Date Funds

Investing can be complex, but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to take a simpler approach to selecting your Hewlett Packard Enterprise 401(k) Plan (the “HPE 401(k)”) investments, consider Birth Date Funds. These ready-mixed portfolios simplify the process by allowing you to invest in one fund that can span your investment horizon—from the time you begin contributing through the years following your retirement.

Why you might consider a Birth Date Fund

Birth Date Funds simplify investing your HPE 401(k) account in two ways:

  1. You only need to choose one fund. Each of the Birth Date Funds comes with an all-in-one portfolio of investments that’s appropriate for investors in a particular age group. That means you don’t need to research and select individual funds to create a diversified mix of investments.
  2. You don’t need to rebalance the portfolio yourself. The Birth Date Funds automatically adjust their investment allocations to become more conservative over time. Once you’ve chosen the Birth Date Fund that’s right for you, the fund will do the rest.

While Birth Date Funds help simplify your investment decisions, you can’t “pick one and be done.” You should still review your choices at least annually, and whenever your financial situation changes.

How to choose a Birth Date Fund

To find the Birth Date Fund that’s appropriate for you, simply pick the fund closest to the year in which you were born:

Birth Date FundMay be appropriate if your birth date is…
Birth Date Fund: 1955 Fund

12/31/57 or earlier

Birth Date Fund: 1960 Fund

1/1/58 – 12/31/62

Birth Date Fund: 1965 Fund

1/1/63 – 12/31/67

Birth Date Fund: 1970 Fund

1/1/68 – 12/31/72

Birth Date Fund: 1975 Fund

1/1/73 – 12/31/77

Birth Date Fund: 1980 Fund

1/1/78 – 12/31/82

Birth Date Fund: 1985 Fund

1/1/83 – 12/31/87

Birth Date Fund: 1990 Fund

1/1/88 – 12/31/92

Birth Date Fund: 1995 Fund

1/1/93 – 12/31/97

Birth Date Fund: 2000 Fund

1/1/98 – 12/31/02

Birth Date Fund: 2005 Fund

1/1/2003 or later

Note: If you do not choose investment options for your HPE 401(k) account, future contributions will be invested in the Birth Date Fund based on the year you were born. Applicable dates for each fund have been determined by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, as shown above.

If you were born in 1960, for example, you might choose the Birth Date Fund: 1960 Fund. If your birth date falls between funds, you can pick the “older” fund or “younger” fund, or you can choose a blend of the two. For instance, if you were born in 1973, you could choose the Birth Date Fund: 1970 Fund for a slightly more conservative mix, the Birth Date Fund: 1975 Fund for a slightly more aggressive mix, or both.

These complete portfolios also include the Conservative Fund, which may be appropriate for older investors with a low tolerance for risk. This fund seeks income with minimal investment in stock for potential appreciation, and its investments don’t change over time like those in Birth Date Funds.

Where you can learn more about the funds

Like the other core investment options in the HPE 401(k), Birth Date Funds are custom funds unavailable to the general public, so you won’t find information about them in the newspaper. To learn more about these funds, check out the Fund Fact Sheets available on Fidelity NetBenefits® or call the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Benefits Service Center at Fidelity at 1-800-409-4015 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. CT.

Keep in mind that investing involves risk. The value of your investment will fluctuate over time, and you may gain or lose money.

The investment risk of each Birth Date Fund changes over time as the fund's asset allocation changes. Birth Date Funds are subject to the volatility of the financial markets, including equity, commodity, and fixed income investments in the U.S. and abroad, and may be subject to risks associated with investing in high-yield, small cap, and foreign securities. Principal invested in Birth Date Funds is not guaranteed at any time, even after an investor retires.
